I always thought this Japanese sentence was a very unnatural translation of "I am at home" and its sound was also strange. However, during the coronavirus pandemic, "私は在宅です" has spread throughout Japan as an abbreviated word for "私は在宅勤務です(I work from home)".
Now, it's natural as a translation of "I work from home" and sounds good to me, so I've adopted this and linked "I work from home". But then again, that may change with the times.
