Unnatural (to this one American).

Let's see. We have Tom. We have a brand new world. Sometime in the past Tom "knew" that brand new world. Often in English we have this ambiguity: was it an event or an ongoing process?

Since Marcelo is translating his own Spanish, we may reasonably take our cue from the preterito: so it was an event. (This clue may not matter: we may not escape the ambiguity in English no matter what we say.)

Thus one (clumsy and unnatural) English rendering (close to what we already have) is "Tom acquired knowledge of a brand new world."
This is just to loosen us up and let us see that alternatives to "knew" exist. If we now seek a natural alternative to "acquired knowledge," then "became aware" comes to mind.

Hence I suggest as natural: "Tom became aware of a brand new world."
