Both are correct, AFAIK.

@JimBreen
Strictly speaking, they are different. However, many people have used it as they are the same.

Including dictionary compilers, who have used "mother tongue" for both.
There were about 20 sentences with 母国語, but most have been changed to 母語. Can you look at the 3 remaining for 母国語?

Actually there are more than 3, I miscounted.

I spoke to a native speaker on this very word quite recently. S/he said the inclusion of 国 is more common in speech.

Ĉiuj certe pravas.
Kaj tamen, simple, "母国語" estas patruja (sia ŝtata) lingvo, "母語" estas gepatra lingvo.
Do, "母語" estas pli konvena.

Honestly, I don't think it should be changed because 母国語 is also common even though 母語 seems appropriate to use. Both of them could be translated "native language" or "mother tongue" in English, so I think to add 母語 as an alternative might be better.

Thanks for the clarification. Some very subtle points there, and it's great to get them from Japanese speakers.
