the English translation doesn't match at all the German one. I think it should be advisable to go back to the Japanese original to make it out.

"God has ordained that all men are mortal." might be a closer match to the Japanese sentence. (Anything that shall die is mortal, though, and vice versa.)

yes, but how many of these gods ordained it ?

can I say that this should probably be discussed with xtofu80 on the german sentence...http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/399451

blay_paul blay_paul August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 6:09:03 PM UTC link Permalink

One, probably.

@saeb
Good point.

sacredceltic sacredceltic August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 6:15:58 PM UTC link Permalink

well, I couldn't really know which one was the culprit...
In any case, "Götter" is a plural...
I suggest a detachment...

@sacredceltic

they're already 'detached'...the german is connected to the english through the japanese...notice that the german appears grey when viewed here

yes, but I mean, even in Japnese, there can be only one or several gods, not both. So the german sentence, along with my french translation of it, should not be linked with the japanese anymore if there is only one.

saeb saeb August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 6:28:44 PM UTC link Permalink

not really japanese nouns don't indicate number...so I guess it can be translated as both 'god' and 'gods'

Most of Japanese don't care about how many gods are there.^^
We are very tolerant of religion.
And I can't know which god was meant in this sentence at all.

blay_paul blay_paul August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 7:10:10 PM UTC link Permalink

It's not 'who' it's 'how many' that is under question.

qahwa qahwa August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 7:12:42 PM UTC link Permalink

I said we don't care how many.^^
