I beg your pardon if this comment is a faux pas; I'm relatively new here. First, I think that if the English sentence needs a comma at all, it should come before "there" and not after. Second, I think the following sentence both sounds natural (I did not say more natural) as the start of a fairy tale and also is a more like the original sentence:
Once upon a time there was a great king who lived in Greece.
Newbie question: This sentence is nineteen months old. Is it too late to make this kind of comment?
