oops!
In England we do talk of "holidays" rather than "vacation". "When it's the holidays" sounds to me a bit closer in meaning to "as soon as it's the holidays" than "at some point during the holidays". What sounds "off" is probably it's=singular and holidays=plural, but I've never heard anyone say "When they're the holidays".
