This doesn't really make sense.
I think this is supposed to say, "I took a class in reading/writing English-language newspapers"
(I'm basing this guess on the Japanese sentence, which is unclear to me as well. Any natives want to chime in?)
It's a bit old-fashioned, maybe, but it means "subscribed to."
I've heard older people say it this way, but I'd never say it this way.
