anyway "le pays" doesn't sound natural in French without context

(as you alluded to in one of your recent wall posts, where "the" gets turned into その（or この）and then back into "this".

I don't think so. It's a translation error. Either an E->J error (in which case the Japanese should use 田舎) or a J->E error (in which case the English should use "this country").
