I would recommend "knappt" here, rather than "hardly".
The word "knappast" normally refers to probability; it's a statement of incredulity.
So, this sentence comes off as meaning "I strongly doubtt here are any books here."
"knappt", however, means something like "barely", or "almost, but not quite". It works nicely in this instance.
Jag adopterade meningen och ändrade ”detta rummet” till ”detta rum”. Däremot håller jag inte riktigt med om att ”hardly” inte kan betyda ”knappast” i den här meningen. :)
