Thanks for the comments. This must have been a sentence that I adopted without noticing the issues with it.

I added another English sentence "By and by, the bitter north wind will begin to blow." ( http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/3280135 ) I linked the Japanese to that sentence and unlinked it from this one. Then I changed "begin" in this one to "began" to match the tense of the linked Portuguese sentence.
