again, a discrepancy between English and German that requires getting back to the Japanese original. I doubt "geriet sie in Panik" has anything to do with a button of any kind...

http://idioms.thefreedictionary...e+panic+button

sacredceltic sacredceltic August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 7:06:38 PM UTC link Permalink

I fully disagree with that one. it is really extremely far-fetched and stretching the art of translating!

saeb saeb August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 7:23:41 PM UTC link Permalink

the german is not directly linked to the english what's there to disagree about...not to mention that 'She pushed the panic button' has the same meaning as 'she panicked'...is that by any chance close to the german meaning?

Probably American English (it did come from the Cambridge Dictionary of _American_ Idioms). I've never heard of it, but as a British English speaker I'm not that qualified to comment.

yes but come on ! "she pushed on the panick button" is so far away from "she panicked". How can you translate one into the other ?

saeb saeb August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 8:00:44 PM UTC link Permalink

if we're gonna pick on this sentence just because the vocab doesn't match the german sentence (obviously since it's an expression), we might as well pick on all these sentences http://tatoeba.org/eng/tags/sho...with_tag/idiom

sacredceltic sacredceltic August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 8:06:41 PM UTC link Permalink

Yes of course it does, and in this case we can use thousands of metaphors as "translations"...
Whatever...

saeb saeb August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 8:19:28 PM UTC link Permalink

I'd like to see you come up with a hundred expressions that mean 'panic' if it's really possible...there's a huge difference between a 'metaphor' and a standard idiom...

sacredceltic sacredceltic August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 8:29:32 PM UTC link Permalink

I'll take care of the metaphors afterwards...

saeb saeb August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 8:34:32 PM UTC link Permalink

I still can't see your point...you can get any sentence, take a word and replace it with all its synonyms and you've still proven nothing...

saeb saeb August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 8:57:37 PM UTC link Permalink

@sacredceltic the issue is on the wall, Trang has the final say on this now, so please no more pointless arguing ^^

sacredceltic sacredceltic August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 9:04:43 PM UTC link Permalink

I'm not arguing, just applying your principles...we'll see what happens then...

saeb saeb August 4, 2010 August 4, 2010 at 9:11:32 PM UTC link Permalink

@sacredceltic please don't make this a personal issue...it's not 'my' principles, I don't own this site...I just don't remember reading a guideline that forbids this kind of translation...if Trang and the rest of the community decide this isn't acceptable...this sentence will be deleted (and I'll make sure it does get deleted)...
