I thin it's a real idiom. Maybe from the 1920s-ish? See 'cut me dead'.

I don't feel happy sticking an 'archaic' on this, so I'll make it 'old-fashioned'. One day I should go through the archaic tags and subdivide them.
I'll add the 'dead' here (as I think that's the more common version by a fair way).
