I'd prefer if the the Japanese had an explicit verb. "Let's only take..."

no, I wouldn't say so.
It's a trip in the sense of a holiday or excursion in my opinion.
"I can't afford a two week vacation so I will only take a weekend break."

because in certain cities, like Berlin, you can take a taxi trip for a fixed amount of money when you don't have enough. When the sum is exceeded, the taxi just stops and drops you.
