
I don't like an adjective being used as a noun. How about "Equestrian events are the only mixed-gender Olympic events."

I had a look online and it is quite common 18,000 Ghits for "Equestrian is" vs 86,000 for "Equestrian events are". So I think I will leave it as is.

You can find examples of almost any whacko expression online.

Equestrian event definitely sounds better.

This is one of the places where the usage is different for experts and normal people. If you look at actual text written by Equestrians, they use Equestrian in the singular without an article to talk about the sport, in the same way we talk about Judo. They also use it with an article to refer to a horse rider.
