Gramaticalmente la frase esta perfecta, pero induce a confusión.

Presas tambien puede significar una mujer en prisión.
Lo primero que entendi fue que "ejecutaron el mismo numero de mujeres"

No hace falta que cambies nada. He añadido otras variantes de la frase en español.
Alguien puede linkarlas al ingles tambien?

En mi opinion usaria mas "fue" que "era". Porque? no lo sé pero me suena mejor :P
