היי רמי,
באנגלית המשפט מתייחס להווה, כלומר, לאפשרות אמיתית - ומביע זאת בנימוס המרבי.
בתרגום שלך לעברית נשמע כאילו זה בלתי אפשרי.
מציע לשנות:
האם תוכל לומר זאת באנגלית פשוטה?

נראה לי שזה מעביר באופן נאמן יותר לקורא העברי את התחושה של המשפט המקורי באנגלית.

אני תרגמתי מאנגלית.
נראה לי וכך הבנתי כי זאת פנייה למי שכבר אמר מה שאמר, ובדיעבד דיבר בשפה גבוהה או בלתי מובנת וגרם לתוצאה כל שהיא.
עתה, הוא נשאל האם, בדיעבד, היה יכול לומר את דבריו בשפה מובנת. ודווקא בלשון עבר...
מובן שהנשאל היה יכול להשיב גם בשלילה... או לומר אחרת.
לו רצה הכותב להתכוון להווה היה משתמש במילה CAN בהווה.

לא, זה במקרה לא כך.
גם אני, כשאני פונה למישהו, אני משתמש ב-could בדרך כלל.
כי זוהי הצורה המנומסת באנגלית. אם אתה רוצה להיות מנומס, עדיף לומר
could you etc.
במקום
can you say that... etc.

לא מדובר על עבר, אלא על הווה. אבל בתרגום שלך נשמע כאילו זה בעייתי, "האם היית יכול להגיד" וכו'. לכן הצעתי להשתמש בצורת זמן שונה, כדי להביע את העובדה שזה אפשרי.

ולראיה, אם תבדוק בשפות האחרות, כולל באספרנטו, המוכרת לך כל כך טוב,
תראה שזה תורגם כאילו כתוב

כנראה שאתה ואני תחושותינו שונות ואנו מבינים בצורה שונה, או שהמשפט הוא דו-משמעי.
יש מי שמבין רק את החיים בהווה ויש מי שגם חושב על מקור הבעיה בעבר.
חוץ מזה להצעתך הראשונה, "האם תוכל" הוא לשון עתיד ולא הווה... ובוודאי לא עבר כמו במקור...
מותר לך להוסיף תרגום במשמעות שאתה בחרת, אפילו בלשון נקבה או רבים... ואולי בהשמטת
"האם"...
