Bad translation, please fix.
I can only presume it is "per second", referring to desertification. The Japanese seems a little unclear about that.
I think it might mean "in an instant".
It could do - but that doesn't make much sense. Unless it's from a manga or anime or something.
New suggestion:
Very regrettably, 1900 square meters of land are turned into desert every second.
That looks good to me - but kotobaboke needs a chance to respond before I go all moderator. It would also be nice if sugisaki confirms the meaning.
Incidentally, I did some research and a 1977 study suggested a desertification rate of 5.825 million hectares per year. Converting that to square meters per second got a figure very similar to the example sentence, so I guess it does mean what we guessed.
That's some very thorough research for a sentence.
