do we need these [XXX] at the end of such sentences?

blay_paul blay_paul August 30, 2010 August 30, 2010 at 8:57:26 AM UTC link Permalink

The in-line [XXX] annotation is present on sentences like these because there is no filter system present on Tatoeba or WWWJDIC. Tags are also not visible on example sentences used on WWWJDIC so the (original) system of including the warning in the sentence text itself has to be used.

But why would we want to warn anybody of anything? A sentence is a sentence. How do I know I should use this? By what standards?

> A sentence is a sentence.

Imagine you are a 35 year old American mother living in Texas. If you don't want your 12 year old daughter to read a sentence then maybe it should have an [XXX] included in it.

This is basically an interim step to show willing. The details aren't that important now, but at some point there should be a sufficiently well established system that we don't end up with Tatoeba and WWWJDIC blocked from access by school computers because some net nanny software has us identified as an unsafe site.

But you know that these schools will block you anyway at some point because one word or another will cause offence anyway. These people live within bubbles of virtual reality.
By Texan, Iranian, Saudi or Pakistani standards, your [XXX] is already irrelevant anyway.
No later than last night I keyed a quote by Flaubert that encourages married women to cheat on their husbands. I would most probably be condemned to death for that, probably through stoning, because it's against Sharia. I also profess atheism in numerous sentences, and that is a capital crime in Iran and Saudi Arabia and many other countries.
You know that Tatoeba will end up being filtered in these countries and bubbles anyway, if it's not already the case...
We'll be lucky if some imam or texan preacher doesn't cast a fatwa or curse.
Internet is just incompatible with these people standards, and there's nothing you can do about it.

@blay_payl
By the way, since tags are exportable now, I believe it’s high time WWWJDIC started moving to using tags. :o It shouldn’t be hard to implement.

Jim's not keen to do so.

Apparently the WWWJDIC doesn't use these[1] and they should thus be removed.[2]

So... we remove the XXX tags?

Yes. Done.
