"if I was gay" > if I were gay.

"if I were" is grammatically correct. "if I was" is often heard but it's ambiguous. It can mean "if I was gay in the past, but I"m not now."

i second that the proper conjugation should be "were", as this is a conditional statement which requires the subjunctive form of the verb.
