en español hay varias formas de hacer construcciones con "se". En este caso es pasiva refleja, el sujeto de la frase es "detectives privados", sería lo mismo que decir "detectives privados fueron contratados para..."
Tu frase, que también es correcta, sería impersonal, no tendría sujeto, aunque el significado sería el mismo.
