As I understand it for the unit of length 'meter' and 'metre' are both valid in British spelling. For an electronic device used to measure something (voltmeter, ammeter, etc.) only the 'meter' spelling is valid.

In American spelling only 'meter' is valid.

In British spelling only 'centimetre' is valid, not 'centimeter'.
