I have a question about the use of だ in that sort of sentence. Most of the time I see XとYとどちらが.... and much less commonly XとYだとどちらが.... , I've never understood the role of だ in that context. Can you provide a brief explanation?

確かに、こちらのサイト（特にTanaka Corpus ）では、「XとYとどちらが….」という表現をよくみますが、「X」や「Y」が短い単語の場合、「と」の音が続くのが気になるので「だとどちらが」や「ではどちらが」などにするとより普段私たちが耳にする口語的な表現になるように思いました。また、「だと」や「では」にすることで比較対象がここまで（XとYの２つ）だということを明確にし易くなる効果があると思います。
ただ、アドプトされていない「XとYとどちらか」という文がたくさんあるし、単語を変更する訳ではないので、アドプトしやすいように変更してもOKだろうと、思い変えさせていただいただけなので、ご都合が悪いようでしたら、元の文に戻します。その際は、改めてお知らせください。
Thank you very much. I know the 「ではどちらが」 pattern, which is fairly common, but I hadn't related it to 「だとどちらが」.
