This is a common pattern. "I not only ___ but I ___, too"

See https://www.google.com/search?q...hrome&ie=UTF-8

Same pattern:

[#8895488] I not only borrowed money from Tom, but I also borrowed money from his wife. (CK) *audio*
[#285094] I not only gave him some advice, I gave him some money. (CK)
[#404082] I not only gave him some advice, I also gave him a bicycle. (Grayster)

I see. Actually, that pattern is new to me.

I thought I've learnt "I study not only English but also French." at school. It was a long time ago, though. :)

Yes,@bunbuku. Both patterns are correct English. The pattern you learned at school is for a simple sentence which has only a single verb doing double duty for both 'English' and 'French'. The pattern @CK illustrates is a compound sentence where the verb is repeated for each clause.

Also, in the second pattern, the two verbs do not need to be identical. This sentence would also be correct English:

I not only am good friends with Tom, but we even fought forest fires together in Australia.
