The link to "She missed him a lot" looks like a misunderstanding. "Gli" indicates that a male is missing someone or something. I had expected "Le" for a female doing the missing.

I ran into this sentence, and the English translation, on Clozemaster, a site dedicated to language learning, so there may now be some learners thinking that 'mancare' is used as the example shows, with the pronoun indicating the gender of the person being missed.
I would have thought: He was lacking a bag ;)
