This site is using the Tanaka sentences. (In case people are not aware of it.)

Trailing spaces.

There are a lot (500ish?) of trailing spaces at the end of the English sentences. I guess they were left over when the [F] and [M]'s were removed. Could that be tidied up?

Thursday WWWJDIC update.

It looks like last week was quite productive:

18 records removed from the WWWJDIC examples.
25 records added to the WWWJDIC examples.

Is that the entirety of what could have been added or is this just what you managed to add? I think you mentioned that the process was really slow.

In theory there are around 1,900 sentences that could have been added, but they have to be carefully selected, checked, and indexed first.

Not to mention that my health is poor, which is why I gave up full time management of the WWWJDIC examples in the first place.

No puedo comunicar muy bien en espanol, pero voy a intentarlo. Puedes crear nuevas frases por esa pagina: http://tatoeba.org/spa/contribute

Tambien puedes traducir frases escritas en otras lenguas, utilizando el boton "traducir".

Pero, todo eso es explicando en la pagina que mostró arriba.

Bienvenido a Tatoeba!

blay_paul blay_paul July 1, 2010 July 1, 2010 at 1:31:26 PM UTC link Permalink

There's something screwy with the "not translated into" page.

Take Japanese not translated into English (for example)
http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentence...ng/eng/page:26

It says "286 results" and there are 29 pages of results. That implies 10 results per page. However there are actually seems to be 200 results per page!

The current implementation shows the same sentences again and again. Sysko has promised to fix that (cf. my post somewhere below)

A question about linking.

Sometimes the translation of closely related sentences uses the different constructions, when a closer translation is possible. Should these be linked?

Examples:
In Belarusian and Ukrainian belonging can be expressed with either "Я маю" (I have, like in 397415) or "У мяне ёсць/У мене є" (like in 337619), with little or no difference in meaning, and both constructions are common in either language.

In Turkic languages, possessor can be stated with a possesive case or implicit from possessive suffixes (see tags "Possessor Explicit", "Possessor Implicit", "Possessor Explicit (Uyghur)", "Possessor Implicit (Uyghur)").

I.e. both translations are valid, but sometimes they don't use the same grammar construction. Should these be linked or not?

I would say 'link'. The art of translation is to come up with what would naturally be said in the destination language in the relevant context. If that means using different grammatical constructs, then so be it.

Demetrius Demetrius July 1, 2010 July 1, 2010 at 9:54:52 AM UTC link Permalink

But the problem is that often these both of these constructions are accepted.

I'm not talking about Russian where the verb "иметь" ("to have") is obsolete. The solution is obvious there.

But in Ukrainian and Belarusian usually both of them are correct and sound OK.

In which case you can link two translations.

Just had this idea: When we post a comment on a sentence, the sentence owner's name should be written next to the sentence. That will make it easier to notice when someone comments on one of your sentences.

You mean in the "Latest comments" section?
But that's what we have email notifications for, don't we? To help you notice that someone commented on one of your sentences.

Sentences with unknown language
http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences_lists/show/91
This list should be deleted - it is very out of date.

Japanese sentences without indices (for Jim)
http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences_lists/show/26
This list should be re-generated. By my estimate there are 1941 Japanese sentences with no index so it must be out of date.

Unlink required
http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences_lists/show/90
Should be deleted. Only has two entries, both of which have been dealt with.

Is this list still needed at all?

I'll leave this to Swift.

Other than that, I emptied the @moderator list and Dorenda's lists. I shall use them for something else later...
