Hi I'm new here and a few of you already know me. As said on my profile page, I hope I can be of use to this site and I will try to correct a sentence I have translated or made myself asap when you comment on it.

You don't have to hope, you already are :P Thanks to you Dutch will soon reach its "3000 sentences" milestone!

Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy hanging around here :)

Tag comments.

to delete = No current sentences. Same meaning as '@delete' tag.
delete = same meaning as '@delete'.

Suggest both 'to delete' and 'delete' tags are changed into '@delete' (for moderator attention).

@needs checked by Paul = I'd rather not be addressed by name. I'm not the only moderator (or the only person here who's good at British English and quite good at Japanese).

Suggest it be changed to @to check (for checking by moderator) or just 'to check' (for checking by anybody).

Lyrics = only one sentence, the rest are in 'lyric'.

Use of tags for specific langauges should be discouraged (as you can filter on language).

So Tatoeba has been updated :)

http://blog.tatoeba.org/2010/06...27th-2010.html

All the tags that have been created so far.
=> http://tatoeba.org/eng/tags/view_all
You can access this page from the "Browse" section, there's a link that says "view all tags".

Useful feature. List of sentences in Swedish not *directly* translated into English:
=> http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentence...in/swe/eng/eng
You can access this page from the "number of sentences" box, by clicking on a language. You can of course replace "Swedish" and "English" by whatever language you want :)

Liface Liface June 28, 2010 June 28, 2010 at 12:58:28 AM UTC link Permalink

Aww, at first I thought the feature was going to be "find a sentence in a certain language that isn't linked to another of a certain language". That would be a lot more useful. Because for most of the ones that come up with a tool there actually is a translation of the desired language, it's just not *direct*.

{{vm.hiddenReplies[1460] ? 'expand_more' : 'expand_less'}} hide replies show replies
Scott Scott June 28, 2010 June 28, 2010 at 1:34:11 AM UTC link Permalink

You can see those indirect translations by also selecting "show translations in language XXX". They will then show up in light gray.

Scott Scott June 28, 2010 June 28, 2010 at 1:35:04 AM UTC link Permalink

If you think that the translation is good, you can add a comment requesting linking or do it yourself if it's possible.

TRANG TRANG June 28, 2010 June 28, 2010 at 6:33:58 PM UTC link Permalink

> for most of the ones that come up with a tool there
> actually is a translation of the desired language, it's
> just not *direct*.

In fact, it depends which languages you're looking at. For instance if you looked at Swedish->Arabic, you would see that most sentences don't have an indirect translation.
http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentence...in/swe/ara/ara

In cases like Swedish->English, where many Swedish sentences have an indirect English translation, what we actually need users to *link* them. Once they are directly linked, they will disappear from the list.

Now I must say, it's a quite tedious task to link sentences. It's one of those features that (really) needs to be revamped. But if you wait until after summer, it should become interesting :)

Scott Scott June 27, 2010 June 27, 2010 at 10:00:39 PM UTC link Permalink

Great. I notice that many listed tags are not linked to any sentences. If you have time, you could clean this up.

When I used the feature "Show sentences in one language which are not translated into another language", I found that the same sentences appear again and again in the list. I checked, and it was indeed not a writing variant, but the same sentence, which appeared on several pages as I looked through the sentences.

ok, certainly an optimization error from me, I will order them by added time, though it will be a bit slower

blay_paul blay_paul June 27, 2010 June 27, 2010 at 10:11:58 PM UTC link Permalink

I think that is because they are on sentences that were deleted. Although the page is also not updated when you delete tags (I guess it will be updated once a week or something?).

sysko sysko June 27, 2010 June 27, 2010 at 10:30:20 PM UTC link Permalink

noce it's not a "update once a week" it's just because a tag is not deleted once there's no more sentence "link" to it (otherwise some tags will always be deleted/recreate like the "to check" tag)

but I think we will add for modo the possibility from the "all tag" page to delete completely a tag

btw while I'm speaking about tag, now it's possible to filter by language (for example french proverb only) so tag which specify a language are not needed anymore

Good idea - but maybe you could list the tags with zero sentences separately to the rest on your big "quicky tag-view page".

the "all tags" page is accesible from any sentence page (on the right you have a "view all tags" link)
the "view all sentences in XXX , with possibility to filter, is accessible by clicking on the flags in home page)

I know it's not obvious yet, but it was for 2 reason
1 - both pages are not "complete" so we would have prefered to have your feedback before
2 - Trang will add submenu to "browse" menu (browse by tags, browse by list, browse by language) and she was extremly busy last week, and I'm really a retard in html/css so I haven't make it :p, that's also why there no "direct" link yet

May I add that I (and others) like to move through a URL to quickly access pages? Like removing the last part from http://tatoeba.org/eng/tags/sho...es_with_tag/OK to yield e.g. http://tatoeba.org/eng/tags
Which then in my understanding would bring up something about tags (and not the error page).
It's not an overly important feature, but a good programming practise.
After all I heard somebody bitching about all those PHP programmers and database website hackers, that broke with the "pure-HTML-page" design of what I described above. :)

I don't know the other languages so I'll have to take your word about them.

*Paging Sysko*

I've decided it's a good idea to simplify the indexing a little by dropping the |1, |2, etc. notation. I basically had it for redundancy and now that the indexing has settled down it isn't as important as it was.

Could you do a global search and replace in the Japanese Index field of "|?(" with "(" ?

e.g. 為る|1(する) becomes 為る|1(する), but ちゃう|2 does not become ちゃう.

There are too many entries to change for the search feature on the Sentence Annotations page to work.

Thanks in advance, Paul

Great! You even read my mind for what I really meant to say, instead of what I actually wrote. ;-)

e.g. 為る|1(する) becomes 為る(する), but ちゃう|2 does not become ちゃう.

Sentences.csv export.

As before the sentences.csv export includes spurious \ symbols accompanying line breaks. Can you please filter for tabs and linebreaks in the sentence text!

Sentence 400602 included a tab character.

4197 seems to have contained two line breaks.

I can't tell whether it's possible to remove them by editing the text as a moderator because they don't display in the first place.

There are about 59 sentences with two line breaks in them

Welcome to tatoeba.
Just some remarks to Scotts general introduction:
When adding new sentences, please also consider copyright issues.
For a general introduction you can watch the video on drumbeat.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here on the wall for general questions, or at the specific sentence if you have issues with a sentence, its translations, doubt about whether a sentence in a foreign language is correct, etc. This is a community-based project after all. Please also fill out your profile so that we know which languages you speak, where you are from, etc.

sysko sysko June 26, 2010 June 26, 2010 at 2:05:12 PM UTC link Permalink

Welcome :)

Even if you know only one and want to learn an other, just add sentences in your language (and check before if they does not exist with the search bar :) ) and ask in comments, how to translate this in language YYY
(btw I think we should add the video somewhere directly here)
