Do sentences have a maximal number of translations that can be directly connected?
(I'm just curious. #10519298 )

There is no fixed limit, but at some point adding more translations is going to be very slow, and trying to load the page might cause the server to run out of memory. (But a few thousand translations should be doable, I think.)

I don't know if it would be possible or even advisable, but perhaps the Tatoeba Project needs some method to indicate which of multiple alternative translations would be best for language learners to focus on, or learn first.

"Tatoeba Project needs some method to indicate which of multiple alternative translations would be best for language learners to focus on, or learn first"
Yeah, yeah, the project needs many things (because language is as complex as it is), but still, we don't have a preferable stemmer in some languages and I don't even want to think an AI. or method that chooses a few from 668 sentences by "best for language learners to focus on" criterion.
Edit:
And what more, we can emphasize certain words in the sentence when we talk, this means that it has a possibility not only 668 sentences (I'm sure I forgot to add some) are good for translation, but about I don't know, nearly a thousand, however we can add only one voice recording to one sentence.

One sentence-ranking method might be to programatically hold a poll or election among the suggested alternatives, with the electorate perhaps restricted to those Tatoebans who have met some criterion, like a minimum number of postings and/or "advanced contributor" status.

For more fun, a user could have, say, up to ten votes to allocate at will among the alternative translations. So user A could indicate his or her preference by casting five votes for sentence W, three for sentence X and one each for Y and Z, for example, and users would not be able to cast votes for sentences they themselves own.

Once a sentence had accumulated, say, 25 votes from three or more separate users, a little bullet or star could display next to that sentence, or the sentence could be displayed in a bold font instead of a regular one.

On the downside, this idea might be somewhat difficult to program, might add too much overhead to Tatoeba's data storage needs and could be subverted by users insincerely upvoting unreliable translations.

I simply leave this problem(?) to clozemaster and such sites.

A sentence may well be perfectly OK on its own, but may be questionable as a translation from a particular sentence in another language. I think what we need is a way to review links between sentences.

I would also welcome a way to see the latest linking activity, like we can see the "latest contributions" (new or edited sentences).

I fully support this idea. People confuse sentences quality and translation quality because there is no way to distinguish one from the other.

If I’m not mistaken, there used to be a way to view linking activity on one’s own sentences. It seems to have disappeared from profile options, for some reason…

Tatoeban rooli ei ole auttaa oppijoita valitsemaan lauseita. Tietokanta, ei oppimisalusta.

I tried to sound a bit sarcastic "Yeah, yeah..." and here also: https://tatoeba.org/en/wall/sho...#message_37885
I also think it's not our problem.

Translation into English, slightly modified from Google Translate:

> Tatoeba’s role is not to help learners choose sentences. It's a database, not a learning platform.

Exactly.

Like I said, I don't know if it would be possible or even advisable. However this database was created for a purpose, whether it's for students or researchers, or for some other purpose, or for all purposes.

A database could include a way to put alternative translations in an order of usefulness, naturalness or on how well they match the meaning of the sentences they are attached to, or in some other useful order.

This way the database could perhaps be more effectively utilized by those who want to use it.

Lauseiden järjestämiseen on jo (alikäytetty) työkalu: arvosteluita voisi käyttää siihen.

Thank you! I already feel it's significantly slower.
