Although this sentence looks grammatically correct, maybe it is better to have opinion from a native speaker.

This doesn't quite make sense to me. Questions don't get closed as a consequence of arousing controversy, so "in spite of" feels out of place. Maybe this:

The question aroused controversy, and still remains open.
