probably not standard

enteka enteka January 5, 2012 January 5, 2012 at 4:57:15 PM UTC link Permalink

Why do you think it's may be not standard?
Could this be more standard?:

> باب النجار مخلوع.

saeb saeb January 5, 2012 January 5, 2012 at 5:06:21 PM UTC link Permalink

> باب النجار مخلوع

sounds a lot more standard-like to me, but then I wonder if it would still keep it's status as a proverb...I think it might be better to file it under a dialect, "egyptian arabic" for example...or if you can request a new dialect to be added and we can tag it for now

I guess you can keep it as مخلع now that you changed the flag

enteka enteka January 5, 2012 January 5, 2012 at 5:11:29 PM UTC link Permalink

Okay, I just changed the flag. But why do you think it wouldn't keep its status as a proverb?

saeb saeb January 5, 2012 January 5, 2012 at 5:15:27 PM UTC link Permalink

> But why do you think it wouldn't keep its status as a proverb?

I don't think it's something you'd see in a text written in standard arabic, it's something coined recently in dialects and isn't a classic proverb as such.

enteka enteka January 5, 2012 January 5, 2012 at 5:21:06 PM UTC link Permalink

Okay, thanks for your explanation.
But what do you think about this sentence:

> الإسكافي حافٍ وباب النجار مخلوع.

Probably it should be dialect then as well.
What would you say in standard?

saeb saeb January 5, 2012 January 5, 2012 at 5:26:17 PM UTC link Permalink

I'm not aware of a standard equivalent of this proverb, to be honest, but I'd probably change اسكافي to صانع أحذية

can you translate http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/891930 into egyptian arabic?

enteka enteka January 5, 2012 January 5, 2012 at 5:53:57 PM UTC link Permalink

Thank you Saeb. I will research a bit if I find any 100% standard expression.

saeb saeb January 5, 2012 January 5, 2012 at 6:00:41 PM UTC link Permalink

hmm seems like اسكافي made it to modern standard arabic dictionaries and you can find it in modern literature...
