This is such a common expression in Japanese loaded with meaning, that there is not direct translation in english. Whilst it literally means "do your best", it is often used in the context where an English person my say "Good luck!". However in Japanese there is a cultural feeling that "we should all do the best we can". This sense is none-existent in the English phrase "Good Luck!". This phrase is impossible to translate literally without losing the emotional context.
