Hello. I am new to Tatoeba but am finding it so useful for learning Turkish. Thanks to all who contribute!
I don't quite understand how you determine which is the original sentence on this forum, and which are translations. But I wonder if the English sentence here should be "according to a nationwide survey." "Vote" implies a democratic, policy-changing activity that occurs during official elections. Opinions, on the other hand, are given in surveys. With the word "vote" in the sentence, the implication is that people stood in line to cast a ballot on whether they think Muslims are linked with terrorism. More likely, some organization telephoned people randomly throughout the nation, asking people whether they believed that Muslims are linked with terrorism. Voicing an opinion on the telephone is different from voting. I don't mean this discussion in a political way; I just think the English sentence is misleading as worded. Thanks!
I had the same reaction, Dottyeyes. I'm sure that the word should be "poll" instead of "vote". I'll change it, unlink translations, and indicate that the original sentence has changed.
You can generally tell which is the original sentence by looking at the sentence numbers. A lower number indicates an older sentence. You can also look at the log on the right-hand side of the page.
By the way, the German sentence came first. Indeed, "Abstimmung" can be translated as either "poll" or "vote". It should have been the former. I'll change it.
You're quite right, Alan. Nevertheless the German sentence is misunderstandable in its current form. It's highly recommendable to replace "Abstimmung" by "Umfrage". Because Muriel has left us and allowed us to make changes, that would be possible.
Thanks. I made that change.
