Can we get an English translation, please?

@Thanuir: I can't get "Ne soyez pas fâchée" (don't be angry) to fit in with "Älkää olko surullisia" (don't be sad).

Aleco Aleco 12 days ago July 26, 2020 at 6:32 PM link Permalink

The sentence means "don't be sad" as said to multiple people. Imagine that you have a whole class of 6 year old kids. And then something they all like breaks. Then the teacher says "don't be upset, I can just fix it!"

Aleco Aleco 12 days ago July 26, 2020 at 7:03 PM link Permalink

Yeah, that's the same. "å vera lei seg" is the common translation for "to be sad". Sometimes "trist" is taught in textbooks, but it is less common and does not work in all situations. It's just easier to teach than the construction "å vera lei seg".

Then it's the *French* translation that is misleading. Sorry, @Thanuir!

I think "Ne soyez pas tristes" would be a good fit.

Thanuir Thanuir 12 days ago July 26, 2020 at 7:39 PM link Permalink

Thanuir Thanuir 12 days ago July 27, 2020 at 7:34 AM link Permalink

Lei: https://ordbok.uib.no/perl/ordbok.cgi?OPP=lei (adjektiv)

Aleco Aleco 11 days ago July 27, 2020 at 9:52 AM link Permalink

That's right. "Lei dokker" also works, but "dokker" has not been an accepted spelling until about 2011. So a lot of people would probably consider it dialectal, and you will hardly ever see it used in Nynorsk texts.
