Yes, this is my personal preference. It might not be very common, but not too rare, especially among those who often use alphabets in their Japanese.
Some softwares like MS-Word automatically place spaces between zenkaku- and hankaku-moji. Most web browsers don't have this feature, so we put spaces myself.

iPadアプリを作るのがこんなに大変だとは思ってもみなかった。

I don't put a space between "iPad" and "アプリ" because "iPad" is for me a Japanese word (pronounced "aipaddo"). "Beispiel", on the other hand, is a German word used inside a Japanese sentence and I (try to) pronounce it as native speakers do.
