Я об этом думал. Но ведь ровным может быть и крутой склон горы...

Теоретически может, но тогда бы в английском, скорее, было слово "flat" вместо "level".

"Flat" - это "плоский" (независимо от угла наклона).
В том-то и дело, что "level" означает "ровный + горизонтальный" => "равнинный". Некоторый недостаток слова "равнинный", как мне кажется, в том, что оно почему-то неявно подразумевает достаточно большие пространства, много большие чем площадь дома. Но возможно, что это моя личная заморочка :)
