@NNC: "cast off"? Hardly. Anyone care to offer a better phrase? "Rejected" or "left"?
@TC: Apart from the above concerns, this shouldn't rather be "We all thought it strange that..."?
--responding to @needs native check--
I would say "dumped" The Japanese verb involved is one you'd use for throwing away rubbish. The Japanese may be strange as well of course.
To me the sense is "wondered" rather than "thought it strange". I don't see any word or phrase implying strange in the Japanese.
Not even 不思議?
You could well be right. It needs someone with better Japanese than me. I do think wonder is an acceptable reading though. In my opinion it refers to the manner of thinking rather than the act being thought about.
The sentence, as it stands now, is correct English.
As it has since been used for a further translation I don't think I should make any changes at the moment. If it is an inaccurate translation I think it best to unlink it and link a correct translation to the Japanese.
Yes, this needs someone sufficiently proficient in both languages to find a matching translation.
I'm afraid I replied so hastily that I didn't even pay any attention to the tags in light of the change in the sentence. I've removed the @NNC tag. Hopefully the @TC will attract someone who can help with the second issue.
This seems fine: to cast off; to dump; to jilt; to dump; to ditch, etc.
The Japanese doesn't necessarily have a violent nuance. It's just :"愛情をかけていたものとの関係を断ち切る。" (Daijirin)
感じのいい人 could be nice, pleasant, agreeable, likable man
I'm not sure what's the problem.
@scott
dumping is a perfectly good word to use here.
I think the problem is over
"wondered why" vs "thought it strange that"
so the translation of 不思議に思った
Both translations are fine.
