Suggest change to "that she was pregnant."
reason: Because the first part of the sentence is in the past perfect tense "had said", it needs to be followed by the past tense.

(I'm sorry but I missed this last time)
"then ... had said" is a little awkward in English. A better version would be:
"And then his wife said that she was pregnant."
(I realise that German has "hatte" but "had said" doesn't fit with "then" in English)
