"put down" makes no sense in this sentence. I can only imagine saying "He put the book down.", but if we are saying where he put it, then it is only "put", not "put down". Therefore - "He put the book on the table."
I know we already have:
He put the book on the table.
I was saying it is the ONLY POSSIBLE translation here.
Neither:
He put down the book on the table.
nor:
He put the book down on the table.
make any sense. That is the point. But I am not the owner of the sentence.
