Is sentence correct?

The sentence is correct, but sounds strange without context.

The Japanese sentence is asking, what his occupation (job) is. Or so I think. It doesn't sound all that natural to my ears.

I think "what does he do?" might be a better alternative. It's both a more literal translation of the Japanese, and I have the feeling it's also something native English speakers would say more often in this context.
