la tom pu ja'a djica lo nu ri gleki = Tom really wanted to be happy.
no reply. changing
{kau} was there to mark focus, as some people do.
{la .tom. pu ja'a djica lo du'u ri gleki} = "Tom really wanted to be happy."
{la .tom. pu ja'a djica lo du'u ri gleki kei kau} ~
{lo se ja'a djica be la .tom. du'u ri gleki} = "What Tom really wanted was to be happy."
Some people mark focus with {ba'e}. I do not subscribe to that in my personal usage, since I distinguish focus from emphasis.
Given these considerations, could you leave the original translation and add alternatives as you see fit (possibly even including {nu} in place of {du'u})?
