This sentence is only linked to the japanese #96955 and #644099 is a more correct translation of the Japanese sentence than this one.
I think it should be deleted. I see a number of other samples that include "made for" used in this meaning, so there's no need for it, for example #294403 , #306288
PS : wwwjdic currently uses "彼らは事故の現場へ急行した。/ They made for the scene of the accident" in it's sample repository. My reaction was to try to correct it to replace "made for" with "hurried to".
