I agree it's not a great example of spoken language, but it's actually the only sentence using the term 顔文字 so I'd hate to lose it.

Isn't the point of the Japanese text that the smiley [(^-^)v] sort-of contradicts or at least qualifies the text, and the following comment is picking up on that?

Sorry for the slow response.
I don't think that's a great example for 顔文字 or 絵文字 as it doesn't use them in a meaningful context.
