This refers to a person ("Show him to me").
What if the original sentence refers to an object (inanimate noun)?

Aha, it exists already:
Покажи это мне.

> This refers to a person ("Show him to me").
Необязательно.
Покажи мне свой альбом. - Покажи мне его.

I thought that "его", which could be genitive case of masculine and neuter nouns, and accusative case of animate nouns, could only be valid here if we are referring to a person.
"Покажи" doesn't require accusative case? And if so, "альбом", being an inanimate noun, wouldn't be "это"?

In Russian we have animate and inanimate nouns but not pronouns. That is, we can use "его" for both categories of objects.
By the way, we should distinguish two "его"'s. The first one is genitive/accusative case of personal 3rd person pronouns "он" and "оно" and the second one is possessive 3rd person masculine/neuter pronoun.

> "Покажи" doesn't require accusative case?
It does.
Покажи кого? что?
- человека, чудовище / альбом, окно > Покажи его.
- девочку, картину > Покажи её.

"Это" mostly refers to the notion or idea.

Speaking of nouns:
Покажи мне его ~ referring to something previously mentioned (m|n), hence a personal pronoun
Покажи мне это ~ referring to something not mentioned specifically, hence a demonstrative pronoun
(This isn't a 100% solution.)

marafon marafon February 19, 2015 February 19, 2015 at 1:29:25 PM UTC link Permalink

> Покажи мне это ~ referring to something not mentioned specifically
Почему?

Ooneykcall Ooneykcall February 19, 2015 February 19, 2015 at 1:33:46 PM UTC link Permalink

Что почему? Ну если что-то было упомянуто в разговоре ранее (по слову), особенно только что - то скорее всего личное местоимение будет, hein? ("Я сегодня закончил свой комикс!" - "Ну, покажи мне его!")

marafon marafon February 19, 2015, edited February 19, 2015 February 19, 2015 at 1:36:19 PM UTC, edited February 19, 2015 at 1:37:26 PM UTC link Permalink

Почему "это" - непременно о ранее неупомянутом?
"А я на голове стоять научился". - "Покажи мне это".
По слову - сейчас придумаю.

Это уже не "что-то" как бы, я предметы (существительные) имел в виду. Ясен пень, что иначе личное местоимение не годится.

Я отметил тенденцию, а не правило.

Да, как замена только что упомянутому существительному - не придумывается. %(
