*Tom在哪里出生的?
真的假的。「的」一词不是名词的用吗?如果写“的”是"Tom is from where?"的意思吧。可我不是个native speaker.
Tom是从哪里来的 ? = where does Tom come from ?
"了" is often used to express a changement, but in this phrase, it is a fact, "where Tom was born" will never be changed
so here we use "的" just like we transform the sentence "Tom是在纽约出生的" to a question "Tom是在哪里出生的?"
I'm not arguing. Just asking:
Tom在哪里出生了= Tom出生了在哪里. What I mean is in this case the 了 isn't meant as the sence-final changement particle but rather the past-marking particle on 出生. So maybe changing the order as in the example above would make that more clear. I agree that 了 making change is inappropriate here, and wasn't my intention.
I've already met this problem while talking with Chinese
IMHO is that it's Tom[是]在哪里出生的 with 是 omitted, which explain the 的
(btw now near 1000 shanghainese sentences :p)
"Tom出生了在哪里" is not correct
*Tom出生在哪里?
