why do you call it a "jar" ? Is it because a bank is often in a glass tower ?

No. ^^ These words have a different gender (bank ‘bank’ is masculine, banka ‘jar’ is feminine), but it’s not distinguished in the Prepositional case in Russian.

According to M. Vasmer:
Банк /bank/ ['bank] ‘bank’ is loaned from German Bank.
Банка /banka/ ['bankə] ‘jar, tin, can’ is from банька /ban'ka/ ['banʲkə], diminutive of баня /ban'a/ ['banʲə] ‘[public] bath’. Баня /ban'ja/ itself is derived from Latin balneum.
