You can do it yourself. Just add

Tenemos una gran variedad de libros.

as a Spanish translation, and, since it already exists, the existing sentence will be linked to this one.

Occasionally there are little problems with that - sometimes you don't specify the right flag, or make a slight typo that you immediately correct, but that results in a duplicate sentence. But you shouldn't worry about that - Horus will take care of that in a few minutes, deleting your sentence and linking the existing one instead.

So you are telling me that I have to rewrite every sentence that is already ready and translated in the list?

Should I consider this method just as an intermediate checkpoint in the linking process - for people who wanna link but are not authorized to do so yet?

That would make sense - but, man, what a workflow... :-)

I think overall it's easier for you to copy-paste an existing sentence, than find a translation, copy its sentence number, write your comment where you paste the sentence number;

and then someone should also copy the sentence number from your comment, press "link", paste your sentence number, thus creating a new link.

Directly pasting the sentence you want to link as a translation seems to be an easier way to do it.

Also, this process allows you not to search for existing translations. You just translate a sentence, and if it's a unique sentence, it'll be added, and if not, the existing one will be linked. That's actually a pretty cool system.

You can also apply to become an advanced contributor, and you'll be able to create links explicitly.

That makes sense. I’ll give it a try... ;-)

Is there a way to restrict the responsibilities for an AC to e.g. linking only etc. because taking all the requirements for being an AC into account I think I wouldn’t be eligible and accepted. Something like a supervision that assesses the correctness and value of my contributed links...

Because this link system bothers me every time I see a correct direct translation only being marked as indirect link - so I wanna do something about it right away and in the most painless way possible.

And BTW: Isn’t this copy-and-paste procedure counting against my quota as contributed sentence? Because if the original contributor also got a credit then this would make two credits for one final translation - and that would mess up metrics...

I don't think there's a way to restrict Advanced Contributor's responsibilities.

You've been here for a while already, so do apply for this role; In fact, what you described as something that bothers you - indirect links that can be changed to direct links - is one of my favorite activities here.

As for the "contribution quota", when you link a sentence your contribution count is incremented by two; If you add a sentence, it increments by one (meaning, if you add a new sentence as a translation it increments by three, 2 for 2 links created and 1 for the new sentence). It doesn't matter whether you're linking your own sentence or someone else's. Hope that answers your question, but I don't think most of us here pay attention to how the contribution count works.

I don’t care about my quota either, I was just worried about inaccurate metrics...

BTW: if I try to add a Spanish translation the dropdown says ‘English’ only and to the right side of the dropdown I see a German flag.

Is this because I removed my language information from my profile?

I had some annoying discussions on the wall because of people drawing wrong conclusion from my profile. And I have no time to deal with that kind of problem when trying to make a point about something completely different.

deniko deniko May 21, 2020 May 21, 2020 at 11:58:33 AM UTC link Permalink

Yes, it shows you only the languages from your profile. You can also use "Auto Detect", in this case there's a very high probability the correct flag will be detected. But if not, you can change it afterwards. Horus will take care of any duplicates, you don't need to delete them or take care of the links yourself, Horus is like a humble super hero who saves us from all this dirty work.

> I was just worried about inaccurate metrics.

Please don't worry about it :)

1. So does that mean that I can contribute sentences without having to add languages to my profile?

2. Where do I find the ‘Auto Detect’ functionality, do I have to switch it on somewhere?

3. Is Horus a software module or an actual person?

4. Are added links from ACs double checked by someone or do they appear in a certain collection that can be worked off by other ACs?

Yes

> 3. Is Horus a software module or an actual person?

It's a bot, so a software module.

> 4. Are added links from ACs double checked by someone or do they appear in a certain collection that can be worked off by other ACs?

No, they're not double checked, but if someone notices the wrong link they will notify the person who created it.

Thanks Denis!

I guess your answers to 1./2. are outdated after finding out about the differences between the old and the new interface design, because I can’t see any ‘AutoDetect’ in my dropdown...

deniko deniko May 21, 2020 May 21, 2020 at 2:52:19 PM UTC link Permalink

Actually, I just checked this Auto-Detect feature and it does work in the new design, at least for me. So by default I see the Ukrainian language when I try to add a translation:

But then I can click on the drop-down list and select Auto-Detect:

And after that I'm typing a translation in a language that will be auto detected:

If the detected language is wrong, it's a bummer. A way out would be to add that language to your profile and then remove it after having changed the flag, but if it's truly the language you would like to work with a lot, add it to your profile and don't specify the level, if you're afraid of being challenged/harassed about that (which shouldn't be happening anyway, but you did mention something like this earlier).

mramosch mramosch May 21, 2020 May 21, 2020 at 2:59:23 PM UTC link Permalink

Not specifying the level seems to be a good alternative/compromise to not specifying the language at all.

Thanks for the hint and your help in general, you are very kind :)
