Esto me suena como separó una parte del dedo, ("cut off"). ¿Desligarla?

No. La frase es correcta tal cual está y es una forma bastante habitual de decirlo como acción reflexiva.
Cfr.:
-Se cortó la mano.
-Se cortó el brazo.

Aunque aquí no se especifique "en el dedo", ello no implica necesariamente el significado de CERCENAR o AMPUTAR; si bien este segundo significado también sería viable.

Distinto sería con la ausencia del reflexivo en la frase:
-Cortó el dedo.
-Cortó la mano.
En este caso sí quedaría más expreso el significado de separar el miembro aludido.
