لبشار بن برد
anyone up for this?
If I understood it, I'd have a try :P can you translate it into English?
nice, ok so this is a verse taken from a poem. It seems to me that author's in a battlefield...the dust is filling the air and the swords are flickering in and out of sight and shining...so he likens it to a night sky with falling stars
my first stab at an english translation:
As if the turbulence of the sands above our heads and the flunging of our swords are a night sky's falling stars.
it would be nice if the translation was more poetic...
btw, it's supposedly the most beautiful metaphor ever produced in arabic literature (at least to some literary critics)
Umm... if only I knew Arabic...
Here's an attempt, though totally worthless since I don't actually know how the Arabic is structured:
"The turbulent sands above our heads, the flinging of our swords... they're naught but falling stars in the night sky."
it actually sounds nice
ok here's a breakdown of the arabic:
كأن as if, it's like, like
مثار (lit. irritated/irritation) refers to how the sand is disturbed by the pounding hoofs of the horses
النقع sand
فوق above
رؤوسنا our heads
و and
أسيافنا our swords
ليل a night
تهاوى falling, pounding, clashing
كواكبه stars, planets (anything shining in the night sky)
the grammar:
(B)(A)كأن
B is like A
so here A=النقع فوق رؤوسنا و أسيافنا
B=ليل تهاوى كواكبه
مثار النقع
irritated sand
فوق رؤوسنا و أسيافنا
above our heads and our swords
ليل تهاوى كواكبه
lit. a night falling stars
(a night where the stars are falling)
ok...anyone wants to add to this before I steal feudrenais' translation?
(B)(A)كأن
أنا فكرت : A is like B
لكن الصحيحة : B is like A !!
!حقا؟
لا أرى أن هناك فرق ^^'
لكن نعم...قصدت
A is like B

Longest. Discussion. Ever.
@feudrenais: oh this is nothing :P
I mean, in the sense of prolongation. It's been going for over a week now, right?
lol yeah, but we've had even longer ones...this is just average
