Annotation:
Note to translators of this sentence: The word actually used by Putin was ‘яркий’ (meaning ‘flamboyant’ or ‘colourful’). Putin later clarified that if he had really meant to call Donald Trump “brilliant”, he would instead have used the word ‘блестящий’, which means ‘brilliant’ or ‘sparkling’). Trump then took the English mistranslation and assumed that Putin had intended a Russian word like ‘выдающийся’ (intellectually ‘outstanding’ or ‘distinguished.’
Was it the candidate himself who assumed that or that report mislead the public as to it?
Brilliant can mean both intellectually outstanding, as Trump took it, or shiny and sparkling. In any case, Putin clarified later that he meant colourful.
Mistranslation dates back to the Bible and people were and still are actually ready to die for creeds that are actually mistranslations...
