Could someone please explain the literal and figurative meanings of this sentence? Based on the German and Esperanto, I'm guessing it can mean something like "Monica barely learned anything."
I think it's rather "Monica did badly (at school)".
с горем (с грехом) пополам = кое-как, плохо (with difficulty)
училась = studied
The literal meaning won't help you much. It's something like it was half studying half torture.
@Pfirsichbaeumchen
I wonder if the German matches. Isn't it rather "мало чему научилась"?
Thanks to both of you for an enlightening discussion. :)
Is there a more idiomatic translation into English?
I chose a better way to translate than the previous one.. thx to all!
