He didn't need to bring an umbrella. / It wasn't necessary for him to bring an umbrella. = Ему не нужно было приносить зонтик.
Не нужно было приносить зонтик. = Вам не нужно было приносить зонтик. / Тебе не нужно было приносить зонтик. / Мне не нужно было приносить зонтик.
I'm not quite sure what you mean. Could you please explain further?
"Не нужно было приносить зонтик" (without subject) could mean either "You didn't need to bring an umbrella" or "I didn't need to bring an umbrella".
He didn't need to bring an umbrella. / It wasn't necessary for him to bring an umbrella. = ЕМУ не нужно было приносить зонтик. (#11810431)
Я не могу исправить это предложение, так как к нему прилагается аудиозапись.
@fjay69
Его не нужно исправлять. Это правильный перевод с испанского. Надо отсоединить английские.
@marafon, are you saying that when a subject pronoun in the dative case is omitted, the sentence can be interpreted as being about the first or second person singular, but not the third person singular, and not a plural subject? In other words, you couldn't have a dialog like this?
"Он приносил зонтик." "Не уже ли. Не нужно было приносить зонтик."
Or this?
"Мы приносли зонтик." "Не уже ли. Не нужно было приносить зонтик."
> are you saying that when a subject pronoun in the dative case is omitted, the sentence can be interpreted as being about the first or second person singular, but not the third person singular
Exactly.
> and not a plural subject?
It can be interpreted as being about the second person plural.
You didn't need to bring an umbrella.
You guys didn't need to bring an umbrella.
> "Он приносил зонтик". - "Неужели. Не нужно было приносить зонтик".
Even though you understand from the context that it's about him, "Не нужно было приносить зонтик" means here something like "The umbrella shouldn't have been brought".
> "Мы принесли зонтик". - "Неужели. Не нужно было приносить зонтик".
= "We've brought an umbrella." "Really? You guys didn't need to bring an umbrella."
I see. Many thanks for the explanation!
